The Board reviewed financial reports from the first five months of the fiscal year. They heard about variousgrant opportunities from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), partner reportson research, market conditions, and the upcoming Oceana Asparagus Day. They also approved budget amendmentsthat resulted in a projected loss. Significant time was dedicated to strategies for promoting Michigan asparagus, including an allocation of $125,000 for a public relations campaign. The board also approved the annual audit report, showing an unmodified opinion.

The Board reviewed financials showing a positive net income despite budget adjustments. Partner reportshighlight the Michigan Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Association (MACMA) – Asparagus Division successes and challenges, including USDA purchases and processing season length. A marketing grant report from Full Tilt Marketing summarized a successful promotional campaign, which included website updates, newsletters, press releases, and social media engagement. The Board approved the MAAB’s 2023-2024 budget including a discussion of possible future initiatives around labor issues and the impact of imports on the industry.

The Board reviewed financials showing a positive net margin and approving the February financial statements. Key discussion points included a proposed marketing campaign budget of $80,000–$100,000 to boost sales,maintaining the assessment rate at 1.5 cents per pound, and changing the assessment due date to October 15th each year. The Board also heard a presentation on food inflation’s impact on consumer behavior offering insights into current market trends influencing the asparagus industry.
December 5, 2022
The Board elected Sarah Greiner as Board Chair, Jordon Walsworth as Vice Chair and Nick Oomen as Secretary/Treasurer. Maner Costerian presented a clean, unmodified MAAB audit opinion and opined that the fund balance shows organizational viability. The Executive Director reported she is working with other commodity groups – cherry, apple, onion, as well as the Michigan Vegetable Council and Michigan Farm Bureau to submit a letter to the President on the new AEWR rate along with a grower call with the Office of Management and Budget. The 2022 Cost of Production Study is underway and will be completed by Oceana Asparagus Day.

The Board approved three promotion events for FY23 – (1) participation in 2023 International Fresh Product Association trade show; (2) hosting a domestic buyers’ mission in May 2023 and (3) implementing a processed product social media campaign in late winter 2023. The approved FY23 budget also included a cost of production study which has been done by MAAB every 7 years since 2002. MSU Extension reported on the 15th International Asparagus Symposium held in June and the Board discussed the additional USDA processed product purchase during the 2022 season. FullTilt reported on the outcomes of year 2 of the fresh asparagus promotion campaign funded with Specialty Crop Block Grant dollars.

The Board set the 2022 assessment rate at $0.015 per pound and retained existing officers for 2022. The Board authorized the Executive Director to work with MDARD to collect unpaid 2021 assessments. MACMA reported on cooperative efforts with MAAB to increase retail purchases of processed product and a request for a USDA purchase. MAAB will conduct a domestic fresh retail buyer’s mission in Hart in late May.
